Virat Kohli is playing as an opener for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first match of IPL 2026 on Saturday (March 28) against Sunrisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. At the end of 10 overs in the 202-run chase for the Bengaluru-based franchise, Kohli is batting on 38 runs from 23 balls. He has already gone past Shoaib Malik’s tally of 13,571 runs to take sixth position in the list of batters with the most runs in T20s.
Kohli needed 29 runs in the ongoing match between RCB and SRH to go past former Pakistan skipper Malik’s tally, and he achieved the objective by taking a single on the third ball of the 8th over in the run chase.
Malik, who led Pakistan to the final of the T20 World Cup in 2007, played 557 T20 matches for more than 30 teams from 2005 to 2025 to score 13,571 runs, whereas the IPL 2026 opener is Kohli’s 415th T20 match.
Apart from playing for India in T20Is and RCB in the IPL and Champions League T20, Kohli has played T20 matches for Delhi in domestic cricket.
The world record of scoring the most runs in T20s is in the name of former West Indies batter Chris Gayle. Gayle played 463 T20 matches from 2005 to 2022 and scored 14,562 runs. He is followed by Kieron Pollard and Alex Hales of England.
