Pakistan cricketer Salman Ali Agha has claimed that, had he been in the place of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, he would have acted differently after being controversially run out during the second ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday.

Miraz was attempting to field the ball on his follow-through after Mohammad Rizwan drove it back towards the non-striker’s end. Salman was out of his crease and in the path of Miraz, who was trying to stop the ball with his right boot.

The two collided, after which Salman tried to pick up the ball. Miraz, however, reacted quickly and produced an underarm direct hit. An appeal followed, and the on-field umpire referred the decision to the TV umpire, who eventually ruled it a run-out.

Salman was furious and threw his helmet and gloves in frustration after exchanging words with Mehidy.

“I think sportsman spirit has to be there,” Agha was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “What he (Mehidy) did is within the laws of the game. If he thinks it’s right, then it’s right. But if you ask for my perspective, I would have done things differently. I would have gone with the spirit of the game. We haven’t done this [type of thing] previously, and we would never do that in the future as well.”

Salman claimed he believed the ball was dead.

“Actually, the ball hit my pad and then my bat. So, I thought he couldn’t run me out because the ball had already hit my pad and my bat. I was just trying to give him the ball back. I was not looking for a run or anything like that, but he had already decided to run me out,” Salman said.

Salman also attempted to play down his verbal exchange with Miraz following the run-out, while expressing some regret.

“It was just heat-of-the-moment stuff. If you ask me what I would have done, I would have done things differently. But whatever happened after that was in the moment,” he said.

Salman also had an intense exchange with Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das.

“I can’t remember what I was saying and I can’t remember what he was saying. I’m sure I wasn’t saying nice things, and I’m sure he wasn’t saying nice stuff either. But it was just the heat of the moment, so we are fine,” Salman said.
