Rohit Sharma is on fire for Mumbai Indians in their first match of IPL 2026, which is taking place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against Kolkata Knight Riders. The 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai needed just 23 balls on Sunday to score his first half-century of the ongoing season. The half-century by Rohit in the 221-run chase against KKR has helped him become the fourth batter in IPL history to record 50 scores of 50+ runs.
Rohit, who is playing his 274th match in the IPL on Sunday, has scored two centuries and 48 fifties in the world’s richest franchise league. The record of most 50+ scores in the IPL is in the name of Virat Kohli. In 268 matches for RCB since making his IPL debut on April 18, 2008, against Kolkata Knight Riders, Virat has crossed the 50-run mark 72 times. He has 8 centuries and 64 fifties to his name in the IPL.
In the list of batters with the most 50+ scores in the IPL, Kohli is followed by David Warner of Australia and India’s Shikhar Dhawan.

The fifty in 23 balls is Rohit’s fastest half-century in IPL history. The previous fastest 50 for him was in 25 balls against Chennai Super Kings in the 2015 final at Eden Gardens.
Before becoming fourth batter to register 50 scores of 50 runs in the IPL, Rohit became first Indian cricketer to hit 550 sixes in the 20-over format of the game.
Rohit, who is the second highest run scorer in IPL history, needed 3 sixes against KKR to reach the milestone of hitting 550 sixes in T20s, and he achieved the objective in the 5th over of the 221-run chase.
Rohit slammed his first six of the match on the second ball of the third over bowled by Vaibhav Arora, and the second maximum came off Blessing Muzarabani’s bowling in the fourth over.
The world record of scoring the most sixes in T20s is in the name of West Indies great Chris Gayle. Gayle played 463 T20 matches from 2005 to 2022 and hammered 1056 sixes. He is followed by Kieron Pollard, who has 982 sixes to his name in 735 T20 matches played so far. A total of 8 batters are ahead of Rohit in the list of batters with the most sixes in T20s, but there is no Indian.
