IPL 2026: KL Rahul set for clear role as Delhi Capitals look for stability

Delhi Capitals (DC) seem to have finally found clarity when it comes to KL Rahul’s role ahead of IPL 2026 – and it might just be the reset both the player and franchise needed.

KL Rahul set for a new role in IPL 2026

After a season filled with experimentation and shifting responsibilities, the think tank has reportedly decided to go back to basics: Rahul will open the innings and take up wicketkeeping duties.

It’s a move that feels both logical and overdue. Rahul has enjoyed his most successful IPL seasons as an opener, where he has consistently delivered runs at both pace and consistency. By giving him a fixed role at the top, DC are aiming to bring much-needed stability to a batting order that looked unsettled at times last year.

In IPL 2025, Rahul’s role was anything but fixed. After being signed for a hefty ₹14 crore, he was often pushed into the middle order, batting at No. 4 in several matches. While he still managed to emerge as DC’s highest run-scorer – with 539 runs in 13 matches at an average close to 54 and a strike rate of 149.72 – the constant shuffling didn’t quite allow him to settle into a rhythm.

The turning point came late in the season. With the team struggling to find reliable openers, Rahul was moved back to the top – and the impact was immediate. His unbeaten 112 off 65 balls against Gujarat Titans was a reminder of what he can do when given clarity and responsibility, even if the team couldn’t cross the line that day.

Now, with IPL 2026 approaching, Delhi Capitals appear determined not to repeat the same mistake. Along with opening the batting, Rahul is also expected to keep wickets – a role he’s already handling for India in ODIs. This dual responsibility could make him even more central to the team’s plans, both tactically and as a senior figure in the lineup.

DC eye bigger goals in IPL 2026

The decision to lock Rahul’s role also comes against the backdrop of growing discussions about how he was used last season. Former India cricketers have openly pointed out that the uncertainty around his batting position may have been holding both him and the team back.

Subramaniam Badrinath didn’t mince words while addressing the issue. “Every year, the batting order is their conundrum, especially where KL Rahul should bat. I believe KL Rahul wants to open the innings. But, on the other side, the team management wants him to bat in the middle order,” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel. “This seems to be an ongoing conflict. They definitely have to solve this issue. It is unclear whether KL Rahul is happy in DC.”

His comments reflect a broader sentiment—that clarity in roles is essential, especially for a player of Rahul’s calibre. Constant adjustments can disrupt rhythm, and in a format as fast-paced as T20 cricket, that can make all the difference.

Echoing similar thoughts, Mohammad Kaif strongly backed Rahul to stick to opening duties. “I think he will open, and he should open only. He has a fabulous record as an opener. If we talk about the last three or four years, his graph, when it comes to strike rate, has gone up a lot. I feel they shouldn’t get confused,” Kaif stated on his YouTube channel.

With Rahul now set at the top, Delhi’s batting lineup suddenly looks more balanced. The middle order has enough firepower with players like David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, and Nitish Rana, allowing Rahul the freedom to anchor or accelerate depending on the situation.

Beyond the franchise, this season could also be crucial for Rahul personally. Having been out of India’s T20I setup since the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2026 presents a golden opportunity to make a strong case for a comeback. A consistent run as an opener – where he is most comfortable – could put him firmly back in the national team.

Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 1, and all eyes will be on how this new clarity translates on the field.
