IPL 2026: KKR announces replacement for Mustafizur Rahman

IPL 2026: KKR announces replacement for Mustafizur Rahman

The three-time IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have made a key change to their squad ahead of the upcoming season, announcing Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as the replacement for Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman.

The Knight Riders were forced to reshuffle their bowling lineup after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed the franchise to release Mustafizur from their squad ahead of the tournament. The decision reportedly came amid political tensions between India and Bangladesh, which ultimately affected the player’s participation in the league.

Mustafizur had been picked by KKR for ₹9.20 crore during the auction and was expected to play an important role in the team’s bowling strategy. Known for his left-arm pace variations and ability to deliver under pressure at the death, he was considered a valuable addition to the squad. However, his sudden exit forced the franchise to quickly look for an alternative overseas pacer.

Bowling setbacks force KKR to look for reinforcements

Mustafizur’s departure was only one of several setbacks for KKR’s pace attack ahead of the season. The team’s bowling department has already been hit by a series of unfortunate developments.

Young Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season after suffering a knee injury shortly before the T20 World Cup. Rana was expected to be an important part of the domestic pace unit, and his absence has further reduced the team’s bowling options.

Adding to the uncertainty, Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana – one of KKR’s most exciting overseas signings – is currently undergoing rehabilitation. His availability for the early stages of the tournament remains unclear, creating additional concern for the team management.

With multiple issues affecting their pace department, the franchise needed to act quickly to fill the gap. The arrival of Blessing Muzarabani is therefore seen as an important move to stabilize the bowling attack before the season begins.

KKR’s new signing brings pace and form to the squad

Muzarabani comes into the squad with strong recent performances and a growing reputation in international cricket. The 29-year-old fast bowler was one of the standout performers in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026.

He finished the tournament as the joint third-highest wicket-taker, claiming 13 wickets in just six matches as Zimbabwe made an impressive run to the Super Eights stage.

Standing at an imposing 6 feet 8 inches, Muzarabani is known for generating steep bounce and troubling batters with his pace and awkward angles. His height and natural movement make him particularly effective on surfaces that offer even a little assistance to fast bowlers.

In the shortest format of the game, the Zimbabwe pacer has already built a solid record. He has taken more than 90 wickets in over 80 T20 Internationals, maintaining an impressive bowling average of around 21.

While IPL 2026 will mark his official debut in the tournament, Muzarabani is not completely new to the league. Last season, he was part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squad as a replacement player, although he did not get the opportunity to play a match.

His commitment to joining KKR was also evident when he chose to withdraw from his contract with Islamabad United for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (IPL) season, prioritizing the IPL opportunity instead.

Muzarabani is expected to arrive in Kolkata on March 17, where he will link up with his new teammates and begin preparations for the season.

KKR will open their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
