Bill Haney has challenged Ryan Garcia to enroll in VADA testing as talk of a potential rematch with Devin Haney later this year gathers momentum.
Speaking during a video appearance following the Mike Tyson Invitational event, Haney said Devin Haney’s team is already signed up for the voluntary anti-doping program while outlining what could come after his son’s next fight.
“We’re signed up for VADA right now. Ryan, you get your a** in there too and let’s make this thing happen,” said Haney.
Haney also said a second fight with Garcia could land in September if Devin Haney gets past Rolando “Rolly” Romero first.
“We can get the rematch with the Garcias too, in September, after we tighten up Rolly Romero.”
Ryan Garcia Rematch
The remarks reignite one of boxing’s most volatile rivalries following the controversy that surrounded their first meeting.
Haney is first expected to face Romero on May 30 in Las Vegas, but Bill Haney’s comments suggested the bigger objective may already be mapped out.
Targeting another title before revisiting the Garcia rivalry would dramatically raise the stakes of a second encounter. What might otherwise be a straight grudge fight could suddenly carry far greater significance.
If Haney succeeds in his next outing, a return with Garcia could carry three-belt welterweight unification stakes. With Allegiant Stadium discussed as a possible venue for the fall, the outline points toward a rematch that could become one of the year’s biggest boxing events.
Garcia, meanwhile, currently finds himself without a clear opponent while Haney prepares for his May return. The delay may force the former champion to take a temporary backseat while the situation unfolds.
A routine outing could keep Garcia active without disrupting the wider plans now being discussed between the camps.
One issue Bill Haney made clear, though, concerns testing. Garcia would first need to enroll in VADA if the rematch is to move forward under the terms being discussed.
For now, Haney’s camp remains focused on Romero before turning full attention back to Garcia and the unfinished business between the two sides.
