The family of boxer Isis Sio has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding her January knockout defeat after questions emerged about the timeline leading into her recent fight with Jocelyn Camarillo.
The clarification follows scrutiny of Sio’s return to the ring just 50 days after the loss, a sequence first highlighted by World Boxing News when examining the timeline of events before Saturday’s bout.
Questions had already been raised about the timeline of Sio’s return, as the teenager fought again just 50 days after a knockout defeat.
Much of the discussion centered on the stoppage itself, but the family was keen to clarify that the decisive blow was a liver shot rather than a head strike, as previously reported by WBN.
However, several head shots landed before and after the delayed reaction to the body blow that eventually sent Sio down.
Regardless of the debate around the knockout, the speed of the defeat against a former three-time national amateur champion raised questions about whether the matchup had come too soon in Sio’s development.
January knockout clarified
In a statement released through Team Sio, the family included clarification of the January 30 loss to Perla Bazaldua.
“As is well understood in boxing, a direct blow to the liver can trigger an involuntary physiological response. Because the liver is highly vascularized and rich in nerve supply, such an impact can stimulate the vagus nerve — leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate.”
“This may result in temporary paralysis, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.”
Suspension explained
The statement also addressed the regulatory timeline following the defeat.
“Please note, she was on a 45-day suspension and cleared before she accepted the fight with Jocelyn Camarillo,” the family said.
They emphasized that the decision to take the bout had been carefully considered before it was finalized.
Signs of recovery
The update also provided a brief medical update on Sio’s progress, which included positive news.
“At this time, Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progression,” the family said.
“She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition.”
The family concluded the statement by thanking supporters for their prayers and messages as Sio continues her recovery.
