Bill Haney says Devin Haney will face Rolando “Rolly” Romero on May 30 in Las Vegas, revealing the welterweight clash is already signed as the former undisputed champion prepares for his next move.
Speaking during a video appearance after the Mike Tyson Invitational event, Haney confirmed the planned return date while outlining what he expects from a showdown with the outspoken WBA champion.
“I’m looking forward to now, on May 30th, here in Las Vegas, Devin beating up Rolly Romero,” said Haney.
The comments offer the clearest indication yet that a deal between the camps is complete, placing Haney back in the ring months after the controversy that surrounded his bout with Ryan Garcia last year.
Haney vs Rolly Romero
Haney’s move toward Romero first also signals a calculated step rather than a simple comeback fight. By targeting another sanctioning-body title before revisiting the Garcia rivalry, the WBO titleholder appears intent on raising the stakes of any rematch.
Another belt would raise the stakes, and if Haney can dethrone Romero on May 30 the division suddenly looks very different. What might otherwise be a simple grudge match suddenly becomes far bigger.
Allegiant Stadium has already been discussed as the preferred stage for a Garcia sequel later this year. The path becomes clearer if Haney deals with Romero first.
Romero defended the WBA welterweight title against Garcia in his last outing and remains one of the division’s most unpredictable champions.
That makes the matchup a dangerous assignment for Haney despite the technical edge many observers believe he holds.
If the plan unfolds as expected, victory over Romero would leave Haney positioned to pursue a fall showdown with Garcia carrying even greater significance.
