Boxing legend Tommy Hearns has been placed under guardianship and conservatorship after a court ruling handed full control of his affairs to his son.
Oakland County Chief Probate Judge Pro Tempore Daniel A. O’Brien confirmed the decision on Wednesday, appointing former super welterweight and middleweight contender Ronald Hearns as the sole guardian and conservator.
The ruling gives Ronald full authority over his father’s care and finances, marking a serious legal development involving one of boxing’s most respected figures.
Court Confirms Guardianship
The decision follows probate court proceedings in Michigan that included testimony from Adult Protective Services officials and members of the Hearns family.
Hearings outlined concerns over how Hearns’ affairs had been handled in recent weeks, including issues raised in court about potential financial exploitation, according to testimony presented during the case.
All parties ultimately agreed to the arrangement, with Ronald now formally responsible for overseeing his father’s care.
Hearns Speaks
Despite the legal developments, Hearns made clear he feels well and wants the situation to settle.
“I’m fine. I want the world to know that I’m doing fine. I feel good,” Hearns said, as reported by Detroit’s ABC WXYZ.
He added: “I just want things to just be calm and good, and just move smoothly.”
Family Position
Ronald described the situation as difficult but necessary, stressing that his focus is on protecting his father.
“My dad is a great man, has a big heart, and for him to be going through this type of situation at this time in his life is terrible,” he said.
Legal representatives involved in the case said the purpose of the guardianship is to ensure Hearns is protected and treated with the dignity he deserves.
The court also heard details of disputes over Hearns’ whereabouts and the handling of his affairs, which formed part of the background to the ruling.
Control of Affairs
Under the terms of the order, Ronald now has full authority over both medical and financial decisions relating to his father.
Guardianship and conservatorship are legal measures used when a court determines that additional support is required in managing personal or financial affairs.
The decision follows weeks of concern raised during court proceedings over how Hearns’ situation was being managed.
Hearns Legacy
Hearns remains one of the most iconic figures in boxing history. Known as “The Hitman,” he became the first fighter to win world titles across five weight classes and built a reputation as one of the sport’s most feared punchers.
The Detroit legend was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012 and is still widely respected for what he achieved in and out of the ring.
It is not the kind of situation usually associated with a fighter of Hearns’ standing, but the court has now placed responsibility firmly with his family.
The matter remains ongoing following the court’s decision.
