Fresh from his exploits at the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson refreshingly admits that he has never thought to be selfless but India head coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav have pushed not only him but the entire squad to change that mindset. Gambhir and Suryakumar have repeatedly revealed that they’ve brought in a cultural shift where personal milestones have taken the backseat with what’s good for the team becoming the priority.
Samson suffered a slump in the lead up to the T20 World Cup that resulted in him being benched from the initial few games. However, a change in tactics meant the wicketkeeper-batter was brought back into the playing XI as the team faced a series of must-win games to keep their title hopes alive and he delivered with a hat-trick of half-centuries.
“That’s the way everyone is thinking now. It was a conscious decision brought in by our captain and coach in the dressing room. The constant message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second,” Samson said during an interaction with the media recently.
“That automatically got drilled into each and every one of us in the team and that’s how we started reacting in every game,” he added.
Samson says staying true to his nature has helped him better contribute to the team’s cause.
“Honestly, I think that’s the true nature. I never wanted to be selfless. I think I’ve always wanted to be myself. So myself brings a lot of different qualities, a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses,” he said.
“From the time of Under-13 days playing for Kerala till this moment, I like to look at cricket as a team sport. We play to win. For that victory, whatever you do should be helping the team first,” he added.
