Jermall Charlo is set for his first title fight in nearly half a decade, as Andreas Hale and Jake Donovan report that he’ll meet JWBA super middleweight champion Jose Armando Resendiz in the May 2nd co-feature of “Zurdo” Ramirez vs David Benavidez.
Charlo (34-0, 23 KO) enjoyed a lengthy but unremarkable reign as WBC middleweight champion, infamously culminating in a 2.5-year hiatus, missing weight in a catchweight bout against Jose Benavidez Jr, and finally getting stripped after an arrest for DWI. He finally made his super middleweight debut last May with a mauling of “Cornflake” LaManna; this was meant to set up his long-awaited grudge match with Caleb Plant, who appeared on the same show, but Resendiz (15-2, 11 KO) toppled Plant and scuttled those plans.
Resendiz, who went from interim to full champion after Terence Crawford’s retirement, has not fought since. Rumors had him negotiating with Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga, but despite all that and a mandatory challenger in Bektemir Melikuziev, it seems he’ll welcome Charlo back to the world stage.
